Over 450 New York farmers markets are ready to share the Empire State’s bounty with their local community – and 180 of these markets are participating in a special program for EBT/Food Stamp/SNAP cardholders! Launched by the Farmers Market Federation of New York, the NY Department of Agriculture and Markets, and the NYS Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance, this program encourages Food Stamp benefits recipients to take advantage of all their local farmers market has to offer. Food Stamp cardholders can exchange their benefits for tokens to use as cash within the market. Learn more about the program and the resources available to your clients by visiting http://www.snaptomarket.com.

Your clients may be unfamiliar with farmers markets or unaware of all the health benefits associated with eating farm-fresh fare. With the following conversation starters, you can encourage, educate, and intrigue your clients enough to visit their local market.
“With just a few tips, you can navigate your local farmers market.”
Some clients may be intimidated by a market trip. Let them know that each market manager is well-versed in the EBT/Food Stamp/SNAP program and will greet them at the market manager’s booth. Both shoppers and vendors are also approachable and friendly. Walk them through the process of using their benefits by familiarizing yourself with the program at http://www.snaptomarket.com/experience.php.
“This spring is the ideal time to make weekly market trips a healthy habit!”
A common misconception about farmers markets is the convenience factor. Reassure your clients that a market trip actually saves time. Not only is it an opportunity to stock up on healthy food, it’s also a social experience for the entire family: Markets welcome children and provide a fun, friendly atmosphere. Transportation is another convenience issue: For clients living in low-income or senior housing, suggest they check to see if weekly transportation to market is available through the housing authority. Or, remind them that many markets are in town centers, on the main bus route.
“You can afford to shop your local farmers market.”
Your clients might believe their benefits will go further at a supermarket. Explain that most products are not pricier at a farmers market; that’s a myth. In fact, because market produce is in-season and locally sourced, it is often less expensive. If a product does cost more, it usually comes with free recipes, prep tips, and advice from a friendly vendor!
More to Explore
In addition to more local produce varieties than the average supermarket, there’s more to discover at market! Your clients can use their benefits on the following market products:
• Local meats, often organic or grass-fed
• Dairy products: cheese, yogurt, and more!
• Maple and honey items
• Locally processed foods: jams, jellies, sauces, pickles, etc.
• Fresh baked goods
• Spices and just-picked herbs
• Food-producing plants
